The
position of the President carries with it great powers with equally great
responsibilities. In addition to being the Chief Executive, he is also
given legislative as well as judicial functions. In times of war, he is
the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. He is also
the spokesman of teh nation in foreign affairs.
The qualifications to become a President are
as follows: a) a natural-born citizen; b) At least 40 years old; c) a qualified
voter; and 4) a resident of the Philippines for at least 10 years immediately
before the elections.
The President is elected by the people by
direct vote for a term of six years, without reelection. He is immune from
suit no matter what crime he may have committed. No court has jurisdiction
over him. He may, however, be removed from office by impeachment.
